Self-drilling screw configurations

Self-drilling metal screws are specified as a system. Point, thread, diameter, length, head, drive, washer, material and finish must work together in the intended joint. A familiar head shape does not establish drill capacity or mechanical performance.

Drill-point and thread options

The point number identifies a drill-point geometry, not a universal steel-thickness guarantee. Point length, flute length, diameter, steel grade, total stack-up and supplier test data determine whether the screw completes the hole before the threads engage.

Head, drive and washer options

Hex, pan, wafer and countersunk heads with bonded sealing washers are matched to tool engagement, bearing area, flush seating and weather sealing. Washer selection must reflect the panel surface, service temperature and exposure.

Steel-thickness selection

The correct point is selected from the joint, not the screw name. Start with steel grade and hardness, then calculate the complete thickness the drill point must cross. Point and flutes must clear this stack before full threads engage.

Quality-document package

Specification review, dimensional inspection, material or mechanical records, coating-thickness or corrosion-test reports, lot traceability and agreed third-party inspection are established before quotation when they are part of the buyer requirement.

RFQ inputs that determine the supply scope

Standards can define dimensions, head style, thread form or mechanical and functional properties, but no single reference covers every self-drilling screw configuration. State the governing standard edition and exact product form, and provide the joint drawing rather than relying on a generic online chart.

Order-specific supply scope for the complete drilling requirement

As a Turkey-based fastener supplier and exporter, we review the joint, drilling requirement, screw configuration, documentation, quantity and destination before confirming a commercially workable option.

Joint-first review

Steel grade, hardness, total stack-up, edge distance, installation speed and tool setting are reviewed before a drill-point configuration is proposed.

Standards clarity

ISO 15480/15481/15482/15483, ISO 10666 and SAE J78 scope is checked against the exact head, recess and drawing; legacy DIN 7504 equivalence is verified before substitution.

Export-ready quotation

Point type, dimensions, material, coating, head and washer, quantity, packaging, documentation, destination and Incoterm are consolidated into the RFQ.

Quality and documentation

Agree evidence before pricing

Documentation scope is confirmed for the reviewed order specification and supply scope. These documents are not interchangeable and must be requested before quotation.

EN 10204 documentation

Type 3.1 or 3.2 material documentation can be reviewed when it applies to the chosen manufacturer, product and customer program. State the required type, witness point and report format in the RFQ.

Inspection scope

Dimensional inspection, material or mechanical records, coating-thickness or corrosion-test reports, lot traceability and agreed third-party inspection can be coordinated as applicable.

Program support

Certificate of origin, packing list, commercial invoice and PPAP/APQP support can be reviewed when they apply to the manufacturer, product and customer program.

Applications

Application details determine the selection

Self-drilling screws may be reviewed for metal studs, light-gauge framing, sheet-metal assembly, metal roofing and cladding, and wood-to-metal or other mixed-material joints.

Metal studs, framing and sheet metal

Confirm the number of layers, receiving-member thickness, edge distance, access and installation method. A fastener that works in one thin sheet may not have enough flute clearance for a multi-layer joint.

Metal roofing, panels and sealed connections

Head bearing area, bonded washer geometry, panel coating, support thickness, weather exposure and installation compression influence sealing. Specify the washer material and corrosion or weathering target.

Wood-to-metal and mixed-material joints

Provide the layer order and thicknesses, required pull-out resistance and head-seating condition so there is enough clearance through the upper material before the screw drills and taps the steel support.

Ordering process

From drawing to shipment plan

  1. 01

    Send the RFQ

Provide the standard or controlled drawing, drill-point type or drilling capacity, screw dimensions, substrate grade and total thickness, head, drive, washer, material, coating, quantity and destination.

  2. 02

    Close specification gaps

We identify drilling-capacity, sealing, document, packaging or commercial points that need confirmation for the actual joint and approved product data.

  3. 03

    Confirm supply scope

Order-specific feasibility and the agreed inspection/document package are confirmed for the RFQ.

  4. 04

    Quote and export plan

The quotation defines scope, packing, Incoterm and delivery assumptions for buyer review.

RFQ FAQ

Self-drilling screw buying questions

Do self-drilling screws need a pilot hole?

A correctly selected self-drilling screw is designed to create its own pilot hole and mating thread in one operation. Pre-drilling may still be required when the substrate, hardness, total thickness or application is outside the verified drilling capacity of the selected screw.

What is the difference between self-drilling and self-tapping screws?

A self-drilling screw has a drill-point tip that creates the hole before the threads engage. A self-tapping screw creates or forms a thread in a prepared or suitable hole but does not necessarily include the drill-point geometry required to drill through the substrate.

What does a TEK point number mean?

The point number identifies a drill-point geometry used for a defined drilling-capacity range. The permitted steel thickness must be confirmed from the exact product and supplier test data rather than from a universal generic chart.

Can self-drilling screws drill through steel?

Yes, when the screw point, diameter, material and installation conditions are matched to the steel grade and total thickness. Send the substrate and stack-up details so the drilling capacity can be verified before quotation.

What information is required for a self-drilling screw RFQ?

Provide the standard or drawing, diameter, length, thread, drill point or required drilling capacity, substrate and thickness, head, drive, washer, material, coating, quantity, documentation, packaging, destination and preferred Incoterm.

Send the joint details, not just a TEK screw name

A TEK or drill-point number is not a universal performance rating. Send the substrate grade, total thickness and stack-up so drilling and fastening capacity can be validated for the actual joint.

Request Quote

Drill-point capacity depends on substrate grade and thickness, point geometry, installation speed and axial load. A TEK or drill-point number is not a universal performance rating; drilling and fastening capacity must be validated for the actual joint and approved product data.
